David "Dave" Elwyn Johnson

Apr 22, 1958 — Oct 7, 2026

La Crosse, WI

David “Dave” Elwyn Johnson (68) peacefully passed away at his home Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

Dave was born on April 22, 1958, in Chestertown, Maryland. He attended Swarthmore High School, where he participated in sports. He later attended Temple University’s Ambler Campus, studying horticulture. After living in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Maryland, Dave moved to La Crosse, Wisconsin in May of 2000. Throughout his career, he worked in the nursery and floral industry; as well as the manufacturing and factory industries before his retirement in 2023.

Dave had many interests and hobbies that brought him joy. Growing up, he enjoyed snow skiing and water skiing, and he loved a good game of chess. In his adult life, he enjoyed challenging crossword puzzles, Euchre, Scrabble, The Boss and The Moody Blues. Dave loved watching sports and was a devoted New York Yankees fan; rarely to be seen without his Yankee’s hat on.

Dave is survived by his loving wife; Monica McKearn-Johnson, his children from a previous marriage; Christopher Johnson and Ally (Johnson) DeNault, his siblings; William (Dottie) Johnson Jr., Stephen (Marlene) Johnson, Sarah (Al) Jackson, and a lifelong friend; Fred Royer. Of course, his family would not be complete without mentioning his beloved pets; Daisy, Barney, and Vinnie.

Dave’s life was filled with many extended family members throughout the Johnson, Freeman, and McKearn families, along with the countless friends who became family. He held a special place in his heart for those he affectionately called his “extra girls”— those who lovingly called him “PopPop.”

Dave will be remembered for the people he loved and the people who loved him. His family, friends and extended circle will forever cherish the memories of his one-liners, his laugh, the Freeman side eye, and his comforting hugs.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents; Harriet “Hattie” (Freeman) and William “Curls” Johnson Sr.

In accordance with his wishes, no formal funeral services will be held at this time. Those wishing to honor Dave’s memory may do so by sharing words of comfort and surrounding his cherished wife, Monica, with love and support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made directly to Monica to help support her in the days ahead. Any expression of kindness and generosity is deeply appreciated.

Monica would like to extend her heartfelt gratitude to everyone who reached out, offered their words of comfort, and surrounded them with love. A special thank you to the dedicated care teams at Mayo Hospital and St. Croix Hospice for their exceptional kindness and compassion given to Dave.
