Douglas Lloyd Hopp, 77, passed away on August 3, 2025, in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Born on April 7, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, Douglas lived a life deeply rooted in craftsmanship, service, and a profound connection to nature. His early years in Illinois laid the foundation for a lifelong passion for the outdoors and an enduring dedication to his craft.
Douglas proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1968 to 1969. He attained the rank of Specialist and served with the 8th Medical Company during the Vietnam War. His time in service was marked by courage and commitment—qualities that would continue to define him throughout his life.
Following his military service, Douglas pursued a career that combined artistry with nature. For over five decades, he was recognized as a premier taxidermist. His meticulous attention to detail and deep respect for wildlife earned him admiration from peers and clients alike. His work preserved not only specimens but also memories and moments cherished by many.
An avid trapper and hunter, Douglas found joy and purpose in the great outdoors. He was known for his skill and enthusiasm in Sporting Clay events, often taking home top honors. These pursuits were more than hobbies—they were expressions of his spirit and love for nature’s challenges and rewards. Douglas was a strong supporter of the Wisconsin Crane Foundation and had a helping hand in bringing back the Crane population. He was also a veteran member with a 50-year legacy of leadership and support with Ducks Unlimited.
Douglas was preceded in death by his late wife, Candace Hopp, and survived by his son, Eric Hopp, his wife, Irene, and brother-in-law, Glenn Wells. In addition to his family, he will be deeply missed by his close friends, Carrie, Kira, and Brian Courser. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to those who share his passions.
