Elsie L. McDowell

December 12, 1928 — May 15, 2025

La Crosse

On Thursday, May 15th, 2025, Elsie McDowell met Jesus face to face. What a joyful reunion it must have been—surrounded by so many beloved family members who passed before her. Heaven gained a faithful soul, and our world lost a cherished presence.

Born on December 12th, 1928, Elsie grew up in DeSoto, Wisconsin, as one of 14 children. Her life was a testament to love, generosity, and unwavering faith. She dedicated more than 50 years of service in the payroll department at Western Wisconsin Technical College, where her strong work ethic and kind heart touched many lives.

Elsie’s love for family was her legacy. Her home was always open—welcoming, warm, and full of laughter. Whether helping at family weddings, caring for children, or simply making time for a friend in need, she made everyone feel seen, special, and deeply loved.

She also volunteered regularly at the senior meals program, where her kindness and dedication brought comfort and nourishment to others in her community.

A devoted member of New Hope Church in Red Mound, Wisconsin, Elsie’s faith guided her every step. Her gentle spirit and giving heart were a source of strength and joy to all who knew her.

She is survived by her beloved twin sisters, Ruth Freiheit of Texas and Ruby Shaw of Waupaca, along with many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews who adored their Aunt Elsie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Elsie McDowell; her brothers Frederick, Maurice, Hugh, Blaine, and infant brother John Ivan; and her sisters Etta McDowell, Jessie Mc Dowell, Jennie McDowell, Alberta McDowell, Alida Sallander, and Beulah Dietrich.

A funeral service to honor Elsie’s life will be held on Saturday, May 31st at New Hope Church in Red Mound, WI. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the service at 11:00 a.m., followed by burial at the cemetery in DeSoto. A luncheon will follow at the De Soto Community Center for family and friends to gather in remembrance.

We continue to honor her life by helping other students at Western Technical College achieve their dreams.
