Gregory Sean Mackey (64) of La Crosse, WI passed away on June 20th, 2025.
Greg was born on July 17th, 1960 (number 7 of 9, as Greg liked to joke) to William & Helen Mackey in Chicago, IL. The family moved to La Crosse in 1968. Greg graduated from La Crosse Central High School in 1978. He worked several jobs in the La Crosse area, but was especially proud of his career at La Crosse Footwear, where he was a union representative.
Greg had recently celebrated his 27th year of sobriety. He was a very active member of his home group of Fireside. He attended other meetings in the area as well and was always welcoming others, helping out with a smile and offering support.
Greg spent his time helping people all his life. He loved his Coachlite Estates community, and helped his neighbors often. This included his many wildlife friends he fed and cared for daily. Even after reluctantly retiring from Mayo last year, he still worked as much as possible.
Greg was predeceased by his parents, William and Helen Mackey, and his younger brother Jim Mackey.
He is survived by his daughter Amber Mackey, his three grandchildren Dru, Jeremiah and Makayla. His siblings, brothers Bill, Tim, and Terry, his four sisters, Markie, Cathy, Beth, and Jenny, and his many nieces and nephews. Greg is also survived by his special friend, Cherie Close and her family.
Greg will be missed by so many; he helped wherever and whenever he could. If you were one of the people he helped we know he’d love for you to pay it forward. His laugh was loud and his smile was genuine, think of these things when remembering him. Live laugh love
