James Friedl

September 14, 1956 — April 23, 2026

Jay passed away peacefully under hospice care on April 23, 2026, with his children at his side.

He was born September 14, 1956, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of James R. and Patricia (Nugent) Friedl. Jay graduated from Columbus High School in Waterloo in 1974 and from the University of Northern Iowa in 1980 with a degree in Business Finance.

Jay dedicated his professional life to banking. He began his career as a teller, working at two banks before moving to La Crescent in 1991, where he joined La Crescent State Bank as Senior Vice President. He went on to become Regional President and CEO of Merchants Bank, where he spent 28 years building relationships and serving the La Crescent community.

Jay worked hard to serve his community not only professionally, but personally. He revitalized the District 300 Foundation, where he served as President of the Board, and was deeply involved with the Lancer Youth Hockey Association, taking on many roles over the years including hockey dad, coach, tournament director, and treasurer.

Most recently, Jay served as President of the Board for the La Crescent Area Event Center, helping bring the project to life through years of fundraising, leadership, and hands-on dedication.

Jay’s contributions did not go unnoticed, and he was recognized many times by the community for his efforts. He cared deeply about creating opportunities for others and giving back to the community he loved.

Jay found joy in simple things such as golfing, reading, crosswords, listening to music, and he especially enjoyed unwinding on his deck. He treasured time with family and friends, loved being a grandpa, had an easy way of making people laugh, and never passed up a chance to dance in the kitchen.

Jay is survived by his sisters, Mary (James) Nadeau of Burnsville, MN, and Margaret (Steve) Bramble of Dallas Center, IA; his children, Emily (Derek) Johnson of Iron River, WI, and Evan James (Katie) Friedl of La Crescent, MN; and his grandson, Henry James Friedl.

Jay was preceded in death by his wife, Trudy Friedl; his parents, James R. and Patricia Friedl; and his brother, Philip Friedl.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date at the La Crescent Area Event Center. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the La Crescent Youth Hockey Association.
