Janet “Jan” Helen Stearns, 84, of Stoddard, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Jan was born on August 30, 1941, in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, and grew up as an only child in Stoddard. She married her high school sweetheart, Norm Krause, in 1959. They were living in Racine, W,I when an opportunity arose to purchase Rocky’s Supper Club in their hometown. On April 1, 1972 — April Fool’s Day — they took the leap, moved back to Stoddard with their daughter, and began what would become a lifelong family business and local tradition.
For more than 54 years, Jan proudly owned and operated Rocky’s Supper Club, pouring her heart into the restaurant and the many friends, families, and neighbors who gathered there through the decades. Her daughter, Jaynne (Krause) Lepke, grew up in the restaurant and returned in 2002 to manage Rocky’s alongside her mother. Jan was deeply proud of the legacy they built together and the impact it had on the Stoddard community.
Jan was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her daughter Jaynne Lepke (Don Woodhouse) of Stoddard; grandchildren Jancyn Lepke and Jenner Lepke; and great-granddaughter Jaylynn Lepke, who brought her immense joy. She especially loved cheering on Jenner’s athletic achievements and never missed a baseball or softball game if she could help it. She also took great pride in supporting her granddaughter Jancyn in her many school and community involvements.
Jan’s beloved German Shepherd, Wolf, and her Papillion, Archie, were her cherished furry companions through the years. She loved cooking for her family and friends, and her Thanksgiving stuffing was a highlight of every holiday meal and the annual Game Feed.
A woman of deep faith, Jan was a lifelong member of Stoddard Community Methodist Church and shared her love for Jesus with everyone she met. She enjoyed spending time on the Mississippi River, playing cards and board games, and visiting locally owned restaurants.
Jan also had a love for travel and adventure, taking memorable trips to Africa, the Amalfi Coast, Arizona, and Florida. Most recently, she fulfilled a wish close to her heart — a final trip to Disney World with her daughter, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter Jaylynn.
In 1999, Jan married Larry Bolster. The two shared a love of racing and trips together and remained lifelong friends.
Jan was artistic, creative, and full of life. Known for her quick wit, fiery personality, and unwavering sense of purpose, she was small but mighty — and always the boss.
