Jean Louise Vitse Manske was born on February 16, 1923, to Iver and Hilda (Holland) Vitse in Houston County, MN, and was raised in Rushford, Minnesota. She grew up on a farm alongside her two brothers, Irving and Carol Vitse, and her sister, Henrietta Vitse Kingsley. Farm life taught Jean the values of hard work, dedication, and perseverance at an early age. Jean had a wonderful gift for storytelling, and one of her favorite stories involved a memorable trip to school with her brother Carol and her lamb. Yes, she actually coaxed her lamb to walk the two miles to school with them! Once they arrived, her parents had to be called to come and retrieve the unexpected visitor. This was just one of the many stories Jean shared throughout her life, bringing laughter and delight to generations of family members who came to know and love her.
A graduate of Rushford High School in 1941, Jean carried her love of learning into her professional life, working in a photography studio where she learned the art of photography. That early experience sparked a lifelong passion. For as long as family and friends can remember, Jean could be found with a camera in hand, capturing moments that would become treasured memories for years to come. She had a special way of preserving family history through her photographs. Even the cards she mailed to loved ones often included pictures of her family, allowing her to share the people and moments she cherished most.
On August 21, 1946, Jean married the love of her life, Harold “Harry” Manske, in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Together, they built a life centered on love, family, and devotion, raising five children: Dianne, Danny, Dick, Debbie, and Jo Anne.
Jean embraced her role as a wife and mother wholeheartedly. She was the ultimate homemaker, preparing meals from scratch and filling her home with the comforting aromas of family favorites, including her famous fried chicken and the homemade pizzas she and Harry made together. She was a gentle, nurturing, and loving mother who wanted the very best for her children and devoted herself to their happiness and well-being. Jean and Harry shared 46 years of marriage, building a beautiful life together through the everyday moments and milestones that make a marriage lasting. They were true partners, finding joy in one another's company, sharing laughter, lending a helping hand, and creating a home filled with love. Their devotion to each other and to the family they raised was a lasting example of a deep and enduring love. The life they built together remained one of Jean's greatest blessings.
Jean's family grew to include 15 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Each new generation brought her another reason to feel proud and grateful. She treasured watching her family grow and took great joy in the lives her children and grandchildren built. Her family was always at the center of her heart, and the love she gave created bonds that reached across generations. Through family gatherings, photographs, stories, and traditions, Jean helped preserve the memories that connected her family to its roots. Her influence will continue to be felt in the lives of those who knew her and in the generations who will carry her stories forward.
Throughout her long life, Jean experienced both profound happiness and heartbreaking loss. She endured the unexpected loss of her beloved son, Daniel, at just 28 years of age; the loss of her husband, Harry, at 66; and the heartbreaking loss of two grandsons, Daniel Ruud and Jason Ruud, at the ages of 40 and 37. Each loss brought its own sorrow, and each left an enduring place in her heart. Those she lost were never forgotten. She carried their memories with her throughout the years, holding close the love they had shared and the moments that remained a part of her life's story. Even through these difficult goodbyes, her family and the love they shared remained at the heart of her life.
Jean leaves behind a family forever shaped by her love, her strength, and the memories she created. She was the matriarch of her family, a keeper of its stories, and a living connection between generations. Her passing marks the end of a remarkable chapter, but the legacy she leaves behind will continue through the photographs she took, the stories she told, the traditions she helped create, and the family she loved so dearly. Though she will be deeply missed, her presence will remain in the countless memories she gave her family and in the love that will continue to connect them for generations to come.
Jean is survived by her beloved children, Dianne (Robert) Weber, Richard (Karen) Manske, Debra (Larry) Ruud, and Jo Anne Delaney.
She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Michelle Manske, Stephanie (David) Gramling, Jennifer (Robert) Masewicz, Dana (Dave) Imler, Amanda (Johnnie) Bartnick, Jessica (Jerome) Tiffany, Lacy (John) Nesler, Jennifer (Steven) Lee, Benjamin Manske, Casey (Sarah) Delaney, Heather (Jeff) Gerdes, Cindy (Justin) Freybler, and Katie Ruud; along with 34 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Iver and Hilda Vitse; her brothers, Carol and Irving Vitse; her sister, Henrietta (Vitse) Kingsley; her beloved husband, Harold “Harry” Manske; her son, Daniel Manske; her grandsons, Daniel Ruud and Jason Ruud; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law.
Jean's long life was filled with love, family, treasured memories, and the enduring bonds that connect one generation to the next. She leaves behind a family who will continue to tell her stories, share her photographs, and remember the woman who helped shape their lives. Though saying goodbye brings profound sadness, the love she gave will never be lost. Jean will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished by all who were fortunate enough to call her wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, or friend.
