John M. Ernster

March 14, 1948 — August 17, 2025

La Crescent

John Ernster passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his wife and children.

John was born on March 14, 1948, in Caledonia, Minnesota, to Linus and Pernilla (Klug) Ernster. He and his seven siblings enjoyed life on the family farm, participating in 4-H activities, and riding horses. After graduating from Loretto High School in 1966, John enlisted in the U.S. Army.

On September 12, 1970, John married his high school sweetheart, Ilene Lager. He went on to attend Winona State University, earning a degree in Physical Education and Health, and later received his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse.

While living in Green Terrace, John became well known for his pitching skills in fast-pitch softball, earning a reputation as a winning competitor. He dedicated 35 years to teaching and coaching in the La Crescent–Hokah School District, influencing countless students and athletes along the way.

Outside of his career, John found joy in fishing—especially with his good friend Butch Myhre—gardening, woodworking, and golfing with Clark Berg. He was lovingly nicknamed “Deckster” for the time he spent on his deck, where he entertained friends and family. He delighted in picking “pucker berries” with his grandchildren, crafting unique gadgets in his workshop, and sharing laughs with those around him.

John’s greatest joy, however, was spending time with his children and their families. In retirement, he cherished his daily noon visits to La Crescent’s Time Out Tavern, where he proudly served as the resident popcorn connoisseur.

John is survived by his wife Ilene; son Michael (Amy) Ernster, grandchildren October (Tyler Groth) and Abigail Ernster; daughter Emily (Jeramiah) Ross, grandchildren Johnathan and Cashten Ross; siblings Alice Ernster, Larry (Kris) Ernster, David Ernster (Maureen McGowan), Mark Ernster, Rita (Ed) Duda, and Jane Meisch; as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Linus and Pernilla Ernster; brother Duane Ernster; brother-in-law Kenny Meisch; and sister-in-law Barb Ernster.

A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Wieser Park Pavilion, 1817 County Road 6, La Crescent, Minnesota.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the La Crescent–Hokah School District #300.
