Joyce Ann Ottum

Joyce Ann Ottum, 77, of La Crosse, WI passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, at home on July 29. 2026 after a resilient 2.5-year fight against autoimmune complications. Born on July 19, 1949, in La Crosse, Joyce was the ninth of ten children born to Mary Jane (Randall – Murray) Cooley and to her father Theron Cooley. She spent her entire life in the community she cherished as home.

Joyce attended Washburn Elementary, Lincoln Junior High, and graduated with the final senior class at the original Central High School in La Crosse in 1967. Her passion for education led to a remarkable career as a preschool teacher with HeadStart. Beginning her teaching journey in 1969 when Project HeadStart was initiated. Joyce devoted an extraordinary 45 years to nurturing young minds and making a lasting impact on countless children and their families through early childhood education.

Family was the cornerstone of Joyce’s life. She is survived by her loving husband, of 56 years, Blaine; daughters Lisa and Michele; son Benjamin and daughter-in-law Carrie Jo; and her beloved grandsons Anderson and Greyson Ottum, who always knew how to fill up her heart. She also leaves behind her siblings Linda Hoeth, Jerald (Sherry) Cooley, Terry (Christine) Cooley; as well as her in-laws: Kathy Murray, Russell (Barb) Ottum, Elvin Ottum, Norman Ottum, Nordahl Ottum. Joyce held a special place in the hearts of her many nieces and nephews and their children who affectionately called her “GREAT! Aunt Joyce”.

She was preceded by her parents Mary Jane and Theron Cooley; siblings: Mary Alice (George) McCarthy, James (Sharal) Murray, Ronald (Marion) Murray, Ruby (John) Hall, Phillip (Sally) Murray, Michael Murray Sr.; Blaine’s parents Edwin and Evelyn Ottum; in-laws: Bruce Hoeth, Mylan (Linda) Ottum, Kenneth Ottum, Carolyn (David) Kennedy, Myrna Ottum; along with several nephews/nieces and a cherished niece Kris.

Joyce’s home radiated warmth and hospitality. A talented cook and baker renowned for her gluten-free mint brownies that delighted all who tasted them, she also mastered the art of canning and pickling produce from Blaine’s garden. Her sewing machine brought creativity to life as she lovingly crafted quilts that became treasured family gifts. Holidays were especially magical under Joyce’s care – her attention to detail made every celebration unforgettable.

Her faith was central to her life. A devoted member of Wesley United Methodist Church in La Crosse, Joyce actively participated in church activities by teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She mentored Confirmands with wisdom while embodying the Methodist tradition of inclusivity. Her guiding mottos – “A job worth doing is a job worth doing well” and “When you agree to do something for others, do it with a joyful heart or don’t do it at all” reflected the values she upheld throughout her life.

Joyce’s dedication extended beyond family gatherings into supporting her children’s activities wholeheartedly. Whether attending school events or cheering from the sidelines at band performances and sports games – or even volunteering at concession stands – she was always present with unwavering encouragement.

Those who knew Joyce will remember her as a loving individual whose kindness made everyone feel valued. Her Legacy is one of generosity – a life dedicated to ensuring those around her felt included and appreciated.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM at Cappella Performing Arts Center (formerly Wesley UMC) at 721 King Street La Crosse. A service will follow the visitation at 11:00 with a luncheon afterward.

May Joyce Ann Ottum’s memory bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her life was a testament to love, dedication, and kindness – a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
