LaVerne S. Urbanek, 85, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 15, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on August 20, 1940, at his childhood home near Chaseburg, Wisconsin, to William and Emma Urbanek.
After graduating from Westby High School, LaVerne proudly served in the National Guard. He went on to work for Vernon County and Norplex, where he was known for his strong work ethic and reliability. He also served on the Westby Area School board.
On April 4, 1961, he married the love of his life, Barbara Schroeder. Together they raised four children: David (Anne), Dennis (Deb), Debbie, and Dawn. LaVerne and Barb built a life centered on family in the home he constructed with his own hands—a place that became a lasting symbol of his dedication, craftsmanship, and pride.
LaVerne was a man of many talents and passions. Woodworking was a lifelong love, and he took great pride in handcrafting ten beautiful grandfather clocks, as well as numerous other impressive pieces. In the warmer months, he could often be found on the golf course or tending to his meticulously kept lawn, a reflection of the care he put into everything he did. Indoors, he enjoyed following sports—often with a bowl of his much-loved ice cream in hand!
He was dependable, generous, and always willing to lend a hand. In his later years, LaVerne found special joy in his great-grandchildren, cherishing every moment spent watching them grow. His love for family was constant and unwavering—always his greatest source of pride and happiness.
LaVerne is survived by his loving wife, Barb (Schroeder); his children, Dennis (Deb), Debbie, and Dawn; his grandchildren, Ben (Taylor) and Katie (Bryce); and his cherished great-grandchildren, Archie, Everleigh, Macie, Beckett, and Rachel. He is also survived by his siblings; Clarence, William, Alvin (Faye) Urbanek and Irene Schmidt. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Emma (Hohlfeld) Urbanek; his son, David; infant son, Douglas; and his sister, Betty Hedrick.
LaVerne’s family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Gundersen Health System’s Onalaska Dialysis site for their many years of exceptional care. They are also deeply grateful to Gundersen’s Hospice team, whose compassion and support made it possible for LaVerne to remain at home, where he passed peacefully, just as he wished.
LaVerne will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
Services will be held Saturday, April 25, at Mary Mother of the Church in La Crosse, Wisconsin, at 10:00 AM, with visitation at the church 1 hour before. Schumacher-Kish is assisting the family with arrangements.
