Margaret Mary Schaub

September 29, 1927 — May 19, 2026

La Crosse

Margaret M. Schaub (Clements), 98, of La Crosse, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at Bethany St. Joseph Nursing home. She was born on September 29, 1927, to Rudolph and Veronica (Hohlfeld) Clements. She grew up on a dairy farm in Coon Valley near St Joseph’s Ridge, where she attended school. Margaret moved to La Crosse when she was 18 and was a waitress at Borden’s Restaurant.

She married Isidore ‘Izzy’ Schaub on May 23, 1949, and together they raised 11 children. She always talked fondly about going to Concordia dancing with Izzy.

She was a housewife and ironed and babysat for others in her ‘spare time’. In later years, she worked in the cafeteria at Central High School and then at The Brick Oven Bakery. After retiring from the bakery, she volunteered at Mayo Clinic until age 90, when Alzheimer’s sadly started to take hold of her. She lived 6 more years at home, fiercely hanging on to her independence.

She must have baked a million chocolate chip cookies and always had some on hand when her kids and grandkids visited. Margaret never got her driver’s license, so she walked or took the bus to most places. Even if she was offered a ride, she would prefer to walk. She enjoyed working in her gardens, mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, and picking strawberries to make jam; anything where she could be outside. She also enjoyed crocheting and playing cards, especially Euchre, Golf, and Kings Corners. She was a devout member of Holy Trinity Parish and made many cookies for their bake sales over the years. She was very proud of her independence in her older years and took great care of her house, yard and gardens. Even the 99-year-old man who lived across the alley from her insisted on mowing his lawn as long as Margaret was still mowing hers! Gotta love the folks from the Greatest Generation!

She is survived by sons, Bill (Jane) Schaub of Lakeland, MN, Bob (Patti) Schaub of Onalaska, and Peter (Ellen) Schaub of Eagan, MN; daughters, Mary Baldwin of Onalaska, Linda Withington of Chaseburg, Sue Milde, Lori Schaub, and Sandy (Tom) Finn all of La Crosse; 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Rudy Clements, Donald Clements, and Dick Clements, and sister Kathy Erickson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Isidore, sons Daniel Schaub and Baby Boy Schaub, and daughters JoAnn Schaub and Carol Schaub. Sons-in-law; Bob Withington and Marty Baldwin; granddaughter, Kelly Jo Schaub; brother Bernie Clements, sisters: Florence Geier, Angie Hagen, and Luella Clark.

A mass of Christian burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 29, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in La Crosse. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home in La Crosse and again from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.
