Mary Sue (Grosskopf) Asmus, 63, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026. Mary was born on December 18,1962 to Richard and Marjorie Grosskopf of La Crosse.
Mary graduated from Aquinas High School in 1981 and attended Western Wisconsin Technical Institute. Mary worked for over 20 years at Gundersen Hospital in the Heart Institute Department.
Mary will be remembered for her kind heart, sharp humor, generosity, and her brave spirit. She loved spending time with her friends shopping, going out to dinner or seeing local theater productions. Mary had a knack for finding just the right gift or card for any occasion.
She was always willing to volunteer or help however she could. Mary loved to bake. Her artistically, hand decorated cookies brightened the lunches of many Meals on Wheels patrons. Mary’s generous spirit lives on today as she donated her corneas to the Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin.
Mary loved her family and enjoyed traveling and spending time with them which included trips to Florida, Disney, Las Vegas and Hawaii with her Dad. During her last trip to Catalina Island, Mary made many happy memories with her great-nephew and niece.
Mary demonstrated her brave spirit over the years, especially as she battled cancer. She never gave up fighting and tried her best to work through her treatments and pain to enjoy her life to the fullest.
Mary leaves behind family and friends who she loved very much. Her Father Richard Grosskopf, brother Michael (Becky) Grosskopf, sisters - Linda (Louis) Zahorak and Kathy (Dewey) Rothering. Nephews – Louis (Jen) Zahorak, and Jonathan (Stephany) Rothering. Nieces – Lauren (Cale) Swanson, Chelsea (Jason) Seymore, Kathryn Zahorak, Lindsey Rothering. Great-nephew and nieces – Louis and Emma Zahorak and Poppy Swanson.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved mother Marge Grosskopf and brother Rick Grosskopf; her grandparents Harry and Gertrude Grosskopf and Charles and Stella Cox as well as her cherished cats Charm and Bailey.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 P.M., Thursday, March 12, 2026 at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, 200 West Avenue S., La Crosse, WI. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, March 13, 2026 at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish, 2006 Weston Street, La Crosse, WI. Burial will follow at Catholic Cemetery.
Mary wanted family and friends to “Remember to love and care for each other. Remember to forgive. Know you are all so important to me and I love you.”
