Michael James Kohnert, 79, of La Crosse, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2026 at the Gundersen Health System. He was born on May 21, 1947 to Curt and Corrine (Kabat) Kohnert in La Crosse. Mike graduated from Logan High School in 1965 and then joined the Air Force. He was a Vietnam veteran. Returning home, he then attended UW-La Crosse where he earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science. He went on to work at G. Heileman Brewing, Western Technical College, and retired from Kwik Trip in 2011. He was married to June (Fogal) Chedester on June 2, 1984, sharing over 40 years together.
Mike liked all things outdoors, which was demonstrated by his many, many days on the golf course, his three hole-in-ones, and the pride he took in his yard. He was also fond of cars and his duck hunting days with his dad, uncle and brother.
Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Corrine (Kabat) Kohnert and father Curt Kohnert. He is survived by his wife June, stepson Lance (Tina) Chedester, grandchildren Brianna and Christopher, sister Kay (Bob) Davis and brother Pete (Alma) Kohnert.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Hillview Health Care and the Emplify/Gundersen Hospice team for their support.
