Phillip Raymond Hengel, Jr. passed away in his home on February 9, 2026. Phil was born on October 18, 1956 to Phil and (Nelda) Jane Hengel in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Phil was a master plumber who took great pride in his work and in helping others with his skills. In addition, he was an artist talented in drawing, painting, and wood-working. Phil loved fishing, camping, and being on the water. He inherited the Hengel wit, and enjoyed joking and laughing with friends . . . eating good meals (which were all of them), listening to good music, and being with family.
His struggles with diabetes, then the loss of his beloved wife last year were a very tough blow to his body and heart, which finally just gave out.
Phil is preceded in death by his wife Vickie (Wells) Hengel, mother Nelda Hengel, and father Phil Hengel, Sr. He is survived by his sister Elaine (Hengel) Dryer, daughter Heidi (Hengel) Nieling, son Daniel Hengel, son-in-law Nicky Nieling, and grandkids Arlo and Everly Nieling.
A memorial will be planned at a later date for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, go hug your loved ones. Help a neighbor. Sit by the water.
