Robert "Bob" Long

DeSoto, WI

Emblem

Robert “Bob” D. Long, age 95, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. Bob was a long-time resident of De Soto, WI and was very well known and respected around town. He served on the De Soto School Board for several years helping the district’s students. Bob was born in La Crosse, WI on July 11, 1930 to Cecil and Matilda “Mabel” (Mellem) Long. He graduated from Viroqua High School in 1948. In 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1953. Bob began his career as an engineer at Ladish Company Inc. in Cudahy WI. He went on to work for the U.S. Corps of Engineers as a lock man between Dresbach MN and Genoa WI for 30 years until his retirement. Bob really enjoyed the people that worked at Ace Hardware on the south side of La Crosse, so much so that he began a second career as a floor associate. He knew that store like the back of his hand and was the “GO TO” guy that everyone asked for. He eventually worked his way to Assistant Manager before retiring for the second time after 24 years at the ripe old age of 90!

Bob married Shirley Sandvick on December 19, 1959 and they were blessed with two sons, Michael and Kevin. They were married for 61 years before Shirley passed away on January 25, 2021. Bob and Shirley were members of the Southside Christian Church in La Crosse, WI and had a very special church family. Bob was an extremely giving and selfless person. He loved playing Euchre, Cribbage, reading, and collecting coins.

Bob had a few strokes in 2022 so he moved to La Crosse in with his son, Kevin, daughter-in-law, Amy, and granddaughter, Lexi. They were able to give “Pops” a loving and safe home for him while providing his personal cares. He also had a special bond with the family dogs, Cuddles, Tessie, and Nugget.

Bob is survived by his son, Kevin (Amy) Long of La Crosse; grandchildren, Zane (Kristina) De Beck of Bourbannais, Ill, Sadie, Lexi and Harley; great grandchildren, Tessa Kay, Sophie Rae, and Legend; sister, Linda (Mike) Waldo; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, Shirley, Bob was preceded in death by his son, Michael; and his brother, Dale.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service at the church. A burial with Military Honors will take place in the Walnut Mound Cemetery in Retreat, WI at a later date.
