Roger C. Hanson, formally of La Crosse passed away peacefully with family at his side at the Tomah VA on February 6, 2026. Roger was born to James and Irene (Vereide) Hanson on March 7, 1941, in Ferryville, WI.
Roger grew up on the family’s farm in Viroqua and Ferryville. Roger graduated from Viroqua High School and joined the Marines in 1959 and was medically discharged in 1960. He returned home to Viroqua where he met the love of his life, Judith Phillips. Roger and Judy were united marriage on June 24, 1961, at St. Charles Church in Genoa.
Roger and Judy moved to La Crosse where Roger worked various jobs including Trane Co and lastly for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation as an Engineer. In 2000 he retired after 31 years with the DOT.
He enjoyed life and his favorite times were spent with family and friends, dancing with Judy every Saturday night and their travels out west, fishing and boating with friends, breakfasts with the DOT retirees and playing cards, spending time at the Moose Lodge, where he was a lifetime member and was once the La Crosse Lodge’s Governor.
But his greatest joy were his children, Connie and Russell, grandchildren, Steven, Benjamin, Chirstopher and Katlyn and great-grandchildren, Logan, Cadmon, Mateo, Eslyn, Madison and Skylar.
He is survived by his children, Connie (Scott) Hurd, Russell (Tere) Hanson, grandchildren Benjamin (Heather Moore) Hurd, Steven (Andrea) Hanson, Christopher Hanson, Katlyn (Estevan) Martinez, great-grandchildren, Logan Hanson, Madison and Skylar Hanson, Cadmon, Mateo, and Eslyn Martinez. His brother Raymond Hanson, sister’s in-law Cheryl Hanson and Kathy Phillips. And nieces, Jody Lynn and Lisa Hanson, Pam and Veronica Hanson, nephews, Chad and Cory Hanson and Matthew Phillips.
He was preceded to heaven by his beloved wife of 37 years Judy, his parents James and Irene, his brother Ron Hanson, Father and Mother in-law, Russell and Lois Phillips, brother’s in-law, Ronnie, David and Kenny Phillips.
Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Friday, February 13, 2026 at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, 200 West Avenue S., La Crosse, WI. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Tomah VA Voluntary Services, Recreation Services Department, so that the Tomah VA can continue to provide Veterans outings and special events like music, games and field trips. Roger enjoyed those events and outings immensely at the VA.
They would also like to thank the amazing staff at the Tomah VA unit 401-A and Recreation Services for the wonderful care and friendship given to Roger, always bringing a smile to his face and making his last two years wonderful and fulfilling.
