Rosemary Bennett

June 28, 1931 — October 10, 2025

La Crescent, MN

Rosemary (Maule) Bennett, age 94, of La Crescent, MN, passed away at home on October 10th, surrounded by the love she so generously gave throughout her life.

Born on June 28, 1931, in Independence, Wisconsin, Rosemary was the daughter of Adolph and Mary Claire Maule, and the stepdaughter to Clotilda Sckroch Maule. From an early age, Rosemary embodied compassion and resilience—qualities that would define her life and career. After graduating from Independence High School in 1949, she pursued her calling in nursing, earning her diploma from St. Francis School of Nursing in 1952. Her dedication to healing and service led her to roles at St. Francis Hospital, the University of Wisconsin Health Center, Head Start, and ultimately as the first podiatry nurse at Lutheran Gundersen Clinic, where she worked proudly until her retirement.

In 1953, Rosemary married James Bennett. Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and unwavering partnership. For 71 years, they complemented each other perfectly—James the planner, Rosemary the doer. Their home at “the farm” was filled with playful teasing, shared dreams, and the joyful sound of Rosemary’s voice calling out “Jimmy!”—a memory that will echo fondly in the hearts of all who knew them.

Rosemary’s greatest joy was her family. She and James raised four children—Kathy, Karen, Jeff, and Mary—with boundless love and devotion. Her home was a haven of warmth, especially during Christmas and Easter, when she hosted lively gatherings filled with laughter, stories, and her famous vegetable dip, creamed cucumbers, and tacos. She delighted in her role as matriarch, beaming with pride over her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Known for her flair and sparkle, Rosemary brought beauty and joy wherever she went. She had a gift of making others feel special—whether through a warm hug, a witty remark, or a dazzling outfit or jewelry that matched her vibrant spirit. Her faith was a guiding light, and she remained a proud and devoted member of the Catholic Church throughout her life.

Rosemary is survived by her children: Kathy Schwanke of Rochester, MN; Karen (Stuart) Spader of Waco, NE; Jeff (Linda) Bennett of La Crescent, MN; and Mary Bennett of La Crescent, MN. She leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren who will carry forward her legacy of love, humor, and grace.

She was preceded in death by her parents and stepmother, her beloved husband James, her daughter-in-law, her sister and brother-in-law, and her mother and father-in-law.

Rosemary’s life was a testament to the power of kindness, devotion, and laughter. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were lucky enough to be loved by her.

Thank you to the Gundersen Emplify Hospice members for their care and support.
