Roy Frank Modahl was born in La Crosse, WI on August 6, 1930 to Frank and Charlotte (Huttenhow) Modahl. Roy spent his youth working a variety of part-time jobs while attending and graduating from Logan High School.
In 1950 Roy volunteered for the army to serve in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953 and returned home to La Crosse. In 1955 he met Doris Helstad at the Avalon Ballroom. A night of dancing turned into a 70 year partnership. Roy and Doris were married October 22, 1955. They raised 4 children together while Roy worked nights and mornings at two different jobs, Trane Company and Mike’s Building Supply. It was a balance of life partnership that endured throughout their marriage.
Kindness, calmness, gentleness, and humility were the principle traits of Roy’s life. The type of presence you could trust and feel safe with. Roy enjoyed biking with his kids, bowling, reading, classical music, and traveling.
Roy passed away at his home on December 20, 2025. He will be forever missed. Roy is survived by his wife Doris, three children Diane (Steve Solberg) Armani, Michael (Penny) Modahl and Steven Modahl, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was proceeded in death by his son Jeffrey, brother Carl (Agnes), sister Rita (Dick) Hanson.
Funeral services will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church December 27 at 11am with Pastor Joanne Richmond officiating. Visitation from 10am until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or the American Legion Post 52. Internment at Mormon Coulee Cemetery.
