On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Steven Charles Asp passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Steve was born to Frederick and Janet Asp. He lived his whole life in the La Crosse area, devoting his time and talents to the area that he loved.
He attended Mt. Calvary Lutheran School (now Mt. Calvary-Grace Lutheran School), then Luther High School in Onalaska. He graduated from Western Wisconsin Technical College with a degree in Tool and Die. Always a hard worker, he worked all through school and while at WWTC landed a job as summer help, mowing lawns, at the SewerTreatment Plant. After three summers, he went to work full time for the Sewer Department as a laborer. And just like that, after holding almost every position within the department, 38 years later, he retired as the Assistant Superintendent; 38 years of hard work for his City of La Crosse.
While attending Mt. Calvary School, he met a girl, Susan Carlson, from the cross-town rival, Immanuel Lutheran School. A couple years later they
reconnected at Luther High School, began dating, and were married 3 years later. They bought a house in La Crosse, and lived there the whole of their too-short 42 years of marriage. Their 2 children, Brian and Kaylin, grew up in that same house, attended Mt. Calvary-Grace Lutheran School, and then Luther High School, just like Dad.
Steve was a great dad and loved his family, spending as much time as possible together with them. He loved taking them camping. Some of his favorite memories were camping with the family and with the extended family of the Camping Group, who all called him the “Fire Master”. This includes, for the last 34 years, the Mt.
Calvary Lutheran Pioneers, where Steve served as Leader and Trainmaster. While he loved his children, his perfectly adorable grandchildren had his whole heart!
Steve is survived by his wife, Sue, his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Heather and their boys, Jason and Wyatt; his daughter, Kaylin and her boys, Owen and Miles; Kaylin’s fiance Jordan and his daughter Natalie; Heather’s mom, Mary; his mom, Janet; his sister, Sandy Earp and her husband Ty, Sue’s brother David Carlson and his wife Lisa; many nieces and nephews, and even a grand niece and nephews. Steve was preceded in death by his dad, Fred, infant twin sisters, and Sue’s parents, Darrell and Linda Carlson.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 16, 2026 from 4-7 pm at the Schumacher- Kish Funeral Home, 200 West Avenue South, La Crosse, WI. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at Mt. Calvary Ev. Lutheran Church, 1602 Park Ave, La Crosse, WI. Friends may visit for an hour before the service.
Memorials may be given to Mt. Calvary Ev. Lutheran Church, Mt. Calvary-Grace Lutheran School, or the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Pioneers.
His family wishes to thank Emplify Health Hospice, especially his head nurse Kim, for their support in Steve’s final days.
