Virgil W. Hegenbart, 88, of La Crosse, died on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at Benedictine Manor in La Crosse. He was born on December 8, 1937 in Rockland, WI to William and Doris (Dolan) Hegenbart. Virgil was a 1955 graduate of Cashton High School. He married Sharon Lind on December 28, 1957 in Sparta, WI. Virgil owned and operated Hegenbart Auto Sales for many years. He loved collecting antiques which was a hobby that lasted his entire adult life.

Virgil is survived by two sons, Scott (Lisa) and Terry (Lori Ann Bendel); grandchildren, Justin Hegenbart, Mark Hegenbart, Nick Venske, Dallas Marshall, and Aaron Hegenbart; sister, Susan (Terry) Larson; former daughter-in-law, Lynn Brown Hegenbart; and several nieces and nephews.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sharon; children, Alan and Pam; and his twin brother, Vernal.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Onalaska. Msgr. Steven Kachel will officiate. Burial will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until the time of services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
