Wayne Merlin Stendalen, 78, of Onalaska, WI passed away peacefully at his home on May 21, 2026. He was born February 17, 1948, to Edwin and Irene (Lee) Stendalen of Westby, WI. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Westby High School. Wayne was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968 and proudly served until being honorably discharged in 1971.
After his military service, Wayne returned home and worked a variety of jobs, spending more than 20 years at Fleming Foods before retiring from Northern Engraving. Next to his family, he was most proud of his 45 years of sobriety. He was an active member of the Riteway Club and served in various roles, including multiple terms as president. He also enjoyed time with his extended family, as well as golfing, fishing, playing cards, and riding his scooter around town.
His presence had a way of making people feel welcome and at ease no matter who you were, where you came from, or what your story was. He welcomed all with open arms and an open heart. He believed in accepting people exactly as they are, making everyone feel seen, heard, valued, and loved.
Wayne is survived by three daughters: Lisa Stendalen, Christine (James) Gilster, and Kimberly Stendalen (Kraig Berberich); three grandchildren: Schuyler Stendalen, Madelyn Gilster, and Isabella Gilster; a sister, Sharon Amundson; two brothers, Robert (Joanne) Stendalen and Gary (Krin) Stendalen; his brother-in-law, Laverne Dunnum; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Joanne Dunnum and Joyce Swiggum; brother-in-law, Richard Swiggum; niece, Cynthia Swiggum; and two nephews, Joel Stendalen and James Amundson.
Memorial service will take place on June 7, 2026, at the Onalaska American Legion Post 336 at 10:30 a.m. with military honors and celebration of life to follow until 1 p.m. In honoring Wayne’s wishes, a private interment of ashes will take place at a later date.
