William "Bill" Espe, age 70, passed away at his home on July 5, 2026.
Bill was born on May 21, 1956, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to Earl and Mary (Moosbrugger) Espe. After graduating from Aquinas High School in 1974, he attended the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, where he studied business.
Known to many throughout the La Crosse community as the "Candy Man," Bill was the proud owner of The Sweet Shop on La Crosse's north side. He found great joy in making candy and ice cream, serving his customers, and building lasting relationships with those who visited his store. His friendly personality and dedication to his craft made him a familiar and cherished presence in the community.
Bill enjoyed spending his free time fishing, golfing, playing tennis, traveling with family, and listening to rock and roll music. In later years, he found happiness in simpler pleasures, including feeding birds and deer, gardening, collecting antiques and coins, grilling outdoors, and spending time with his family.
Bill is survived by his daughters, Susan (Marty) Diersen of Chaseburg, Wisconsin, and Elizabeth Larson of Lone Rock, Wisconsin; his brother, James Espe of Westby, Wisconsin; and his grandchildren, Marcella, Madalyn, Tytus, Kaylee, Patrick, Hendrix, Oaklee, Charlotte, and Arlo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Espe and Mary Espe. He was also preceded in death by his former wife, Cheryl Espe.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, 200 West Avenue South, La Crosse. Visitation with family and friends will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue until the time of service. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
